Wärtsilä Acquires Transas

Wärtsilä has acquired global marine navigation solutions manufacturer Transas of the United Kingdom. Established in 1990, Transas produces bridge systems, digital products and electronic charts, and also provides professional training and simulation services, ship traffic control, monitoring and support. The company has created a unified cloud-based platform for managing marine operations. Transas has 22 regional offices with 1,000 employees worldwide and distribution in 120 countries. Its workforce will be integrated with Wärtsilä Marine Solutions, providing a large base of software engineers to develop smart products and a digital platform. The transaction is valued at $259 million.

The acquisition occurred as Wärtsilä works to establish digital connections across the entire marine supply chain that are secure, smart and cloud-based. The company’s Smart Marine Ecosystem vision would connect smart vessels with smart ports to maximize the use of resources and operational efficiency, minimize environmental impact and risk and achieve high levels of safety and security. Wärtsilä’s goal is to reduce shipping sector overcapacity, sub-optimal fuel consumption, and waiting times at ports and other high traffic areas.
