St. Augustine Beach Renourishment Begins

Under the St. John’s County Shore Protection Project, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $9.5 million contract to Marinex Construction for the renourishment of St. Augustine Beach. Construction began December 19 and will last for approximately three months.

The shoaling was partially a result of down drift from local beaches so the project was funded at 80.5 percent by the Corps and 19.5 percent non-federal including funding from St. John’s County. It encompasses a 3.9 mile stretch of beach from south of Anastasia State Park to south of the St. Augustine Inlet. Approximately 800,000 cubic yards of sand will be removed by cutter suction dredge from the navigation channel. Project activities include vibration control and monitoring, environmental species monitoring, and turbidity monitoring.
