This past August Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd. received an order for the Port Works of Package 1.2 of Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project in Bangladesh from Sumitomo Corporation. The contract sum is approximately 162 billion Japanese yen (US$1.4 billion). The construction period is 77 months with an expected completion date in January 2024.
The Package 1.2 of Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project is a part of Japan’s initiative toward exporting its highquality infrastructure. In order to respond to the recent increase of electricity demand in Bangladesh, the country’s largest power plant will be constructed in Matarbari District, located in the southern part of the country. The main contract was awarded to the consortium of Sumitomo Corporation, IHI Corporation, and Toshiba Corporation, by the Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) as the ODA loan project provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Penta-Ocean will undertake the port works, such as the dredging of the access channel for coal cargo ships, construction of the bund to mitigate sedimentation, and reclamation and land development works for the power plant ground site. Penta Ocean was awarded the contract for the temporary channel dredging as part of the preparation work (Package 1.1) of this project by CPGCBL, and this dredging work was completed in April 2017. This new order underscores the value of the previously completed project and Penta’s technological skills, strength and management capabilities.
The present project involves channel dredging of some 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) and 250 meters (820 feet) wide to a water depth of -18.5 meters (-60 feet). The total estimated dredging volume is 21,700,000 cubic meters (28,382,528 cubic yards). A bund will be built as a mitigation measure and 8,341,000 cubic meters (10,909,616 cubic yards) of soil improvement will be executed with Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) and 3,766,769 cubic meters (4,926,747 cubic yards) of soil improvement will be done using a Deep Mixing Method. The preload will be 1,864,000 cubic meters (2,438,020 cubic yards) and the total reclamation will be 5,269,000 cubic meters (6,891,592 cubic yards).
