Tideland Signal Lighted Buoys Chosen for Zakum Island Project
Tideland Signal has delivered 24 SB-138P channel marker buoys complete with SolaMAX140 lanterns to mark the newly-developed Zakum Islands 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the shore of Abu Dhabi.
The buoys were manufactured at Tideland’s facility in Abu Dhabi and were delivered within three weeks to meet the strict delivery schedule of the contractor.
Zakum Development Company (ZADCO) has been using Tideland offshore platform marking AtoNs for more than 25 years and chose the buoys for this project which involves ZADCO building four artificial islands to support drilling operations in the area.
Also involved in the project is dredging contractor National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC) who had previously worked with Tideland to deploy buoys for Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) Channel in record time. NMDC dredged the 2.4 km (1.5-mile) channel to 20 feet using the dredge Al Kattouf.
The channel provides access for vessels from the Al Bateen Channel to the new marina near the ADNEC facility.
Tideland’s SB-138P buoys are manufactured from rotationally molded polyethylene and filled with expanded polystyrene – a process that prevents water ingress in the event of puncture or collision. The rotational molding process ensures a seamless body and increased thickness of polyethylene at major stress points creating a buoy that is virtually unsinkable.
In addition to offering a service life of up to 20 years low maintenance reduced weight and exceptional resistance to damage and marine growth; SB-138P is fully recyclable at the end of its life.
