In a festive ceremony mid-July Dragages Ports christened their new hopper dredge Gambe d’Amfard. Dragages Ports is the French government-owned dredging company.

Built by Damen Shipyards the 780-cubic-meter hopper dredge is equipped with both a clamshell (grab) bucket and a trailing suction pipe for use in maintenance dredging work in the harbor at Le Havre France.

The dredge was built at the Damen Galati yard in Romania.
The hopper dredge was designed for doing three daily hopper loads. Loading and discharge efficiency and vessel speed were vital elements in the contract.

The vessel runs 12.5 knots at 90 percent MCR with a fully loaded hopper. Propulsion is by two Caterpillar 1920 kW 3516B engines running Schottel rudder propellers. The vessel has an overall length of 60.35 meters and beam of 14.32 meters. The hopper volume to the top of the overflow is 780 cubic meters and the dredge has a Bureau Veritas classification for Unrestricted Navigation working under the French flag.

The dredge has a fully air-conditioned accommodation for eight persons including single cabins mess room galley and stores.

The Pulleman crane hoists 25 tons on 15 meter outreach using a 9.5 cubic meter clamshell bucket wth a dredging depth of 35 meters. The hopper is equipped with a grid that screens out debris and the hopper can be filled in one hour using the clamshell configuration.

In trailing suction mode the dredging depth is 22 meters. The suction pipe has an inside diameter of 350 mm and can fill the hopper in an hour using the BP3530LD Damen dredge pump.pipe. This dredge pump is also used to empty the hopper through a 350 millimeter bow coupling. The dredge is also equipped with four hydraulically-operated bottom doors. Two BP 1515 dredge pumps provide jet water when in trailing suction mode and when emptying the hopper.

The Gambe d’Amfard is named after a sand bank off the coast of Le Havre and replaces a dredge that has been in use for more than 35 years.
