The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced on September 13 that the Dredge McFarland sustained hull damage while performing emergency maintenance dredging in the Delaware River.
No one was injured. The channel area above the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge is closed while the incident is being investigated.
The McFarland was escorted by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Philadelphia Police to Fort Mifflin where it anchored.
The ship was finishing an emergency dredging operation near the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge on September 13. As the starboard dragarm was being raised it appeared to snag something on the bottom and the crew felt a lurch in the vessel which somehow caused a gash in the starboard hull. The dredge had to abandon a negligible load in order to safely travel to the anchoring facility.
The Corps deployed survey boats to the incident site to investigate channel conditions. The incident is under investigation
