Backhoe Cornelius Dredging at Balboa
Royal Boskalis Westminster nv is conducting a contract for the extension of the container port of Balboa Panama at the Pacific mouth of the Panama Canal. The work which began in May will take approximately 15 months and is worth €50 million.
The project is being executed for Panama Ports Company S.A. a member of the Hutchison Port Holding Group of Hong Kong. It includes construction of additional port area a retaining rock dike and a link structure to the existing berths 16 and 17.
The backhoe dredge Cornelius began dredging overburden at the landfill site on June 22 digging into two 5000-cubic-yard barges Terrafare 501 and Terrafare 502. The material is being transported to a placement area 21 kilometers away.
When a sand floor has been created the hopper dredge Stuyvesant will dredge sand for the fill beginning in October or November of this year. When the fill reaches the required level vibro compaction of the reclaimed land will begin.
The civil works will be executed by the Panamanian partner Intercoastal Marine Inc.
This project is in anticipation of the growing container transport through the Panama Canal after it is deepened and additional sets of post-Panamax-Locks are added.
