International Dredging Review

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) has recognized two U.S. conservation districts for their outstanding overall communications efforts and presented them with an annual award it sponsors through the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD).

The AEM/NACD “excellence in communications” award went to Upper Big Blue Natural Resource District in York Nebraska with an honorable mention award given to Riverside Corona Resource Conservation District in Riverside California. AEM applauded the two winners during special ceremonies at the closing banquet of the NACD Annual Conference February 4-8 2007 in Los Angeles California.

NACD noted that the Upper Big Blue district award-winning effort in effect transports a river across a state to teach thousands about river systems. With a grant from Water for the West the district created a “Fantastic Fun-River Run” 30-foot steel and plywood river model. For the past two years the display has been featured at events around the state educating people of all ages about the myriad issues affecting river systems – an example of how innovative new ideas can make a difference in reaching America’s public with the conservation message.

The other winner the Riverside Corona district reaches out to people of all ages and backgrounds using multi-lingual booklets presentations and educational tools to help create a community that sustains natural resources with efforts including posters to educate students and the public about local plant and animal communities – an example of effectively adapting outreach materials to meet local needs and expand the reach of the conservation message.

The award spotlights the outstanding work done by local conservation districts to inform the public of the importance of conserving and enhancing America’s natural resources.
