Damen Dredging Equipment is a dredge designer and manufacturer based in Nijkerk the Netherlands. The company was founded in the early 1940’s and started off as a dredging contractor creating the “new land” of the Dutch polders. In the course of time the contracting business became less important and the yard began specializing in the design manufacture and maintenance of the dredges belonging to the many other contractors in the area.
The company then known as De Groot Nijkerk became part of the Damen Shipyards Group in the 1980’s. Damen Dredging Equipment now is the dredging division of the Damen Shipyards Group and works as an independent professional catering to all contractors dredging needs. The company offers an extensive range of dredging equipment and instrumentation.
The product range consists of various types of stationary dredges such as plain suction and cutter suction dredges. The plain suction dredges used for dredging sand can be designed for deep dredging or for specific uses such as for solving the siltation problems of hydropower dams.
Damen builds a standardized range of cutter suction dredges for inventory and offers a wide range of options which can be added quickly and the dredge delivered in a short time.
Both types of dredge can be delivered as prefabricated shipbuilding kits to any overseas yard.
Another versatile dredging tool is the DOP submersible dredge pump. This hydraulically operated wear resistant dredge pump can be a part of a stationary dredge or attached to an excavator. The DOP then uses the hydraulic drive of the excavator and does not require a separate power pack.
Various types of dragheads are available – all adapted to the contractor’s job. These heads include a cutter unit an auger and jet water-assisted mining heads. Also booster stations are available for use behind the DOP pump or in the discharge pipeline of the stationary dredges. The booster can be electrically or diesel driven. For the booster stations as well as for the rest of the product range the boosters can be customized for specific requirements.
All dredging tools can be fitted out with dedicated dredging instrumentation and automation from simple vacuum or pressure indicator on the dredge pump to production monitors and fully automated unmanned dredges controlled from a nearby sand classification plant.
The company has post-delivery support facilities for customers and an extensive range of parts for replacement repairs or vessel upgrading. Field service engineers can assist at maintenance jobs and repairs on site and give training or instruction to the crew.
