Damen Dredging Equipment has delivered two Suction Tube Position Indication (STPI) systems to the hopper dredge Port Méchins of Dragages Verreault Inc. in Canada. The system consisting of transmitters plus the necessary soft- and hardware was mounted on a 50-year-old dredge that is still in good condition.
Built in 1949 the 750 m³ hopper dredge had an old Meconaut suction pipe position system which is based on the bubble principle. This system worked well over the past 40 years but the time had come for a state-of-the-art trailing pipe positioning system. Should the Port Méchins be replaced in the future the new system can easily be transferred to another dredge.
The delivery of the entire system complete with its transmitters was done only four weeks after ordering. The installation took only two working days as the crew had already prepared all cabling. The old Meconaut system was not removed; even state-of-the-art new systems cannot compensate for the nostalgic feelings the old bubbling companion evokes.
