The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is conducting a dialogue with its customers and the shipping/maritime community to consider restructuring its measurement system for the cost of transporting containers through the Panama Canal. Carrying hundreds of containers on a vessel’s deck is a growing trend in the maritime industry. In many cases more containers are carried on-deck than in the inner chamber of the ship.
To ensure the Canal receives the fair value for its services the ACP is considering updating its measurement system for containers transported on deck. A new measurement system will help the ACP to run the Canal efficiently reliably and safely. ACP Administrator Alberto Alemán Zubieta is meeting with industry representatives.
Once a decision is made the ACP will make a formal announcement.
