CEDA Issues Call for Papers for WODCON XVII
The Central Dredging Association (CEDA) has issued a call for papers for WODCON XVII the seventeenth World Dredging Congress to be held in Hamburg Germany at the CCH – Congress Centrum Hamburg September 27 through October 1 2004.
Deadline for submission of abstracts is October 1 2003.
The theme of the congress is “Dredging in a Sensitive Environment”.
The organizers have arranged three international sites receiving abstracts – the CEDA Secretariat in Delft The Netherlands the Western Dredging Association (WEDA) in Vancouver Washington USA and the Eastern Dredging Association (EADA) in Port Klang Malaysia.
In recent years there has been a move towards managing sediments on a river basin scale where the dynamic interrelationship between rivers estuaries and coastal waters is fully acknowledged. It is increasingly apparent that the proper management of dredging and dredged sediments can provide real environmental gains for fluvial and coastal ecosystems while ensuring that rivers continue to function as economic lifelines for local regional and national economies.
Examples of dredging “with nature” include: returning dredged sediments to the estuary in a controlled way to help to achieve or to maintain natural processes and creating inter-tidal areas and habitats such as wetlands nesting islands and offshore reefs. To ensure safe navigation and to meet the needs of increasing commerce navigation channels and ports will continue to be dredged whether for maintenance or expansion.
Dredging and dredged sediment management will continue to be an integral element of sustainable development of rivers and coastal zones. The congress will bring together researchers and practitioners from industry academia and government from all parts of the world to discuss developments in all aspects of dredging but with a special a focus on dredging “with nature”.
The papers must be original and should not have been published or offered for publication elsewhere. Purely promotional text will not be accepted. The technical paper committee reserves the right to accept a submission as an oral or poster presentation. Authors must assign all copyright of the accepted papers to WODA.
Abstracts should be a maximum of 300 words and should be sent by email in either Rich Text Format (RTF) Portable Document Format (PDF) or as plain text (ASCII). Other file formats cannot be opened.
Five copies of printed abstracts should be provided and the submission must include the name affiliation complete return address telephone and fax numbers and email address of each author. The corresponding author’s name must be identified. Authors are requested to send their abstracts to the given address in their own geographic area. Authors should indicate if their submission is for poster presentation only.
The technical paper committee will assess the abstracts and authors will be informed by December 1 2003 of the acceptance of the paper and will receive the authors’ kit. This will include instructions for the preparation of the full manuscript the conference registration form and the copyright transfer form. Draft manuscripts having a text of 3000 -5000 words must reach the organizers before February 15 2004. All manuscripts will be refereed for quality correctness originality and relevance. To assist in revision of the manuscripts for the final submission reviewer’s comments will be sent to the authors by April 15 2004. The final camera-ready papers must be received by July 15 2004.
The submission and acceptance of an abstract as an oral or poster presentation implies that one or more of the authors will register for the congress pay the appropriate fees and attend the congress for presentation of the complete paper or poster in English. Therefore one full registration with payment must accompany each draft manuscript. If the registration fee is not paid at that time the paper will be withdrawn from the program and will not appear in the proceedings. Papers addressing dredging as part of a larger scheme that ensure that our waters fulfill their ecological and economical functions in a balanced way are especially encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: River basin scale sediment management strategies sustainable relocation of dredged sediments environmental restoration in estuaries beach replenishment regulatory developments and source control programs.
Other general dredging-related topics are welcome including dredging techniques automation and control land reclamation sand gravel and mineral mining cleanup (remedial) dredging beneficial use of dredged materials including economics treatment of dredged sediments disposal of contaminated dredged material pre- and post dredge monitoring.
