As of Friday September 14 the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was open with movement of vessels occurring under heightened security and more regulated conditions.

The American Association of Port Authorities has posted a status report from its member ports and all remain open but with heightened security. Cruise ports such as Canaveral in Florida have issued instructions to persons boarding cruise ships and the Coast Guard has a major presence in many ports. At the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach California incoming vessels are anchored outside the breakwater and escorted in after a boarding and review by the United States Coast Guard.

At the Port of San Francisco the Coast Guard is boarding ships within a security zone from the baseline to 12 miles outside the gate. Inbound vessels are not allowed to enter the precautionary area until the Coast Guard has boarded and determined safety.

The Port of Baltimore evacuated its World Trade Center building on Tuesday morning and has closed it to visitors. Only tenants and employees with special temporary photo identification are allowed to enter the building.

At Mobile Alabama the Mobile Coast Guard established a safety zone of its area of responsibility and has forbidden vessels of 300 gross tons or more from entering departing from or moving within this area without permission of the captain of the port.

At the Port of Greater Baton Rouge the port area and docks were secured with guards local police and State police restricting access to persons who can identify themselves and have a definite business purpose in the port area. This security was to continue until at least 6 a.m. today.

The Port of Guam is at the highest state of alert. The Coast Guard has limited explosive HAZMAT and fuel loading and unlading operations until further notice. Port police are inspecting every vehicle entering the Cabras Island Terminal Area.

On September 11 the Corps of Engineers closed the locks at Sault Ste. Marie Michigan and the Port of Duluth-superior was not allowing incoming vessels.

In Canada the Port of Vancouver British Columbia has declared its terminals a “no public zone” but the port is open for business.
