Richard D. Steinke was approved as executive director of the Port of Long Beach on December 1 1997.
Steinke replaces S.R. Dillenbeck who retired from the position in October. Steinke has served as acting executive director since October 3.
He joined the port in 1990 as director of the Properties Division and was promoted in 1995 to deputy executive director. In that capacity he oversaw the completion of a 170-acre terminal for Hanjin Shipping Co. which opened last September.
He also helped guide the port during a $150 million roadway construction program and the procurement of funding for the $1.98 billion Alameda Corridor – a 20-mile rail expressway linking the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles to the transcontinental railheads near downtown Los Angeles. As executive director he will oversee the port’s daily operations and manage a team of 302 full time port employees. His annual salary is $150000.
Steinke said he would focus on the port’s strengths and rely on his staff to help meet his objectives. “We know our goals and mission” he said. “We must remain focused on the needs of our customers and our need to grow.”
He is a skilled negotiator and consensus builder. In 1994 he was instrumental in the purchase of 725 acres of land and water area from the Union Pacific Resources Co. which provided the acreage for the new Hanjin Terminal. He also negotiated a sale of 13.8 acres of land to oil refining firm Ultramar Inc. That sale included provisions for the port’s receipt of valuable easements for rail traffic through the property.
Before coming to the Port of Long Beach he served five years as airport property officer at Stapleton International Airport in his native Denver Colorado. He is a graduate of Chadron State College in Nebraska.
