Panamanians voted in favor of the proposed Panama Canal expansion on Sunday, October 22. The voting began at 7 a.m., and by 9:30 p.m., 78 percent had voted in favor of the expansion.

Damen Evolved from Contractor to Manufacturer

Damen Dredging Equipment is a dredge designer and manufacturer, based in Nijkerk, the Netherlands. The company was founded in the early 1940s and started off as a dredging contractor creating the new land of the Dutch polders. In the course of time, the contracting business became less important and the yard began specializing in the design, manufacture and maintenance of the dredges belonging to the many other contractors in the area.

. The New Orleans District Corps of Engineers awarded a $16.9 million contract on October 24 to elevate about three miles of hurricane levee on the West Bank of metropolitan New Orleans.

Boskalis, DI to Dredge for Steel Plant in Brazil

Royal Boskalis Westminster nv has won a dredging contract for the construction of a steel plant in Sepetiba, Brazil. The contract was awarded by ThyssenKrupp CSA Companhia Siderrgica, which is a joint venture of German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp Steel AG and Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), the largest diversified mining company in the Americas and the largest producer of iron ore and pellets in the world.

Calculating the Z in X, Y, Z: Jim Herrin Continues the Hazen Tide Gauge Tradition

Report from Jim Herrin: Our entry into the dredging industry came in 1983 when a retired dredger walked in the door with a half-finished design and asked if we could help him. Frank Hazens name would eventually be attached to a radio tide monitoring system that became the standard in the dredging industry. Frank Hazen was a career dredgeman who knew how important accurate tide corrections were and how difficult they were to obtain in the harsh dredging environment, through fog, dark, cold, mud and wind.

Alluvial Ensuring Survival of Traditional Mineral Dredge Designs and Techniques

Alluvial Dredges Limited (ADL) celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2005. Its founding in 1935 was a joint venture between Lobnitz & Co. of Renfrew Scotland, whose first hull was laid in 1848, and Yuba Manufacturing of California (YMC). At the time, both companies were world leaders in the dredge mining design field.

Nearly 300 people attended this year's Western Dredging Association (WEDA) meeting and Texas A&M Dredging Seminar. Held June 25 through 28 at the Marriott Mission Valley Hotel in San Diego, California, this was the 26th annual WEDA meeting and the 38th annual Texas A&M Dredging Seminar.

GLDD Donates Archives To Bowling Green State University Jerome Library

. Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company has announced that it will give its historic collection of photography on its work at Chicago and throughout the Great Lakes to the Jerome Library at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. The collection, according to Richard Adams, publications manager for the company, includes hundreds of photos from the turn of the last century through the 1940s, when Great Lakes was active in the region from which it derives its name.
