IUOE Local 25 Marine Division held its third annual Shop Steward Awareness Program on June 8th and 9th at the Ramada Inn in Hightstown, New Jersey. President and Business Manager Ernie Whelan and his team established this program in 2002 to communicate information to the members of Local 25 of the International Union of Operating Engineers. By educating and informing these shop stewards and lead dredgemen at the two-day workshops, they are accomplishing this goal.

Because of Local 25's vast jurisdiction and uniqueness of their work, it is critical that the information be brought back to the membership in a professional and timely manner. The fact that Local 25 covers the entire Eastern Seaboard makes "routine" job site visits very difficult. Whelan's administration relies heavily on the shop stewards to keep the lines of communication open.

At this years' class, more than 30 shop stewards and lead dredgeman attended, representing dredging companies Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, Weeks Marine, Norfolk Dredging, Bean Excavation, DonJon Marine, Jay Cashman, Caldwell Marine, Spearin, Preston & Burrows, Langenfelder Marine and Manson Construction. Many of the shop stewards traveled long distances to participate in this program.

"Local 25 truly appreciates their commitment and management's cooperation in allowing them to attend,” said Whelen.

The two-day agenda included guest speakers who covered topics unique to the dredging industry and organized labor. The shop stewards received reference manuals and many other handouts to bring back to their respective job sites. Ernie Whelan and several of his staff also gave reports on safety and training, new member orientation, health care and a complete overview of their medical, pension, vacation and annuity benefits.

Whelan gave the opening statement on both days, and spoke on "Overview of the Shop Steward Handbook". Other speakers were: Dr. Bob Angelo, Director of Rutgers Union Leadership Academy: "Steward's Roles, Practices, Rights and Duties"; David Curry, Emergency Management Training Specialist, IUOE International Environmental Technology and Training Center: "Overview of Training Opportunities of the IUOEIETTC; Dan Nahorney, Communications Director, and Mike DeLauro Education Specialist from Prudential Financial; Bud Evans, Regional Director of the IUOE Region One Northeastern States: "Direction of the IUOE Training and Organizing" ; Scott A. Winter Recording Corresponding Secretary and Director of Training & Safety: "Training Opportunities"; Glen D. Thomas Corporate Safety Manager Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co. Hofmann, Author, Lecturer and Member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States: "Maritime Law, Jones Act, Maintenance and Cure"; Larry H. Schleyer, Benefit Plans Administrator: "Overview of the Medical, Annuity & Vacation Plan Benefits".
