EPA Extends Comment Period

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has extended the comment period on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Designation of Dredged Material Disposal Sites in Central and Western Long Island Sound (DEIS) and the draft Site Management and Monitoring Plans (SMMP’s) to November 17, 2003 at 5 p.m.

The EPA, in cooperation with the Corps of Engineers, is considering one or more dredged material disposal sites in the waters of Long Island Sound under section 102(c) of the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act, and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act.

The EIS provides an evaluation of the existing sites known as the Western Long Island Sound Disposal Site, the Central Long Island Disposal Site, the Cornfield Shoals Disposal Site and the New London Disposal Site. Additional alternatives include other open water sites, and other types of dredged material handling and management, as well as the no action alternative.
