Vasco da Gama Launched

On November 5, 1999, Krupp Fordertechnik and Thyssen Nordseewerke launched the jumbo hopper dredge Vasco da Gama, for Belgian dredging contractor Jan de Nul. The dredge is being built at Thyssen Nordseewerke’s yard in Emden, Germany. The 33,000 cubic meter hopper makes the vessel the largest dredge in the world. At the Europort Exhibition in Amsterdam, November 1999, Krupp’s display included a video of the spectacular launch, which attracted an interested audience whenever it was shown.
