The International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) hosted 17 attendees at its International Seminar on Dredging and Reclamation, October 21 – 25 at the Grand Park City Hall hotel in Singapore.

The topics covered at the event included an overview of the dredging market and the development of new ports and maintenance of existing ports; project phasing (identification, investigation, feasibility studies, de- sign, construction and maintenance); a descriptions of types of dredging equipment and boundary conditions for their use; state-of-the-art dredging and reclamation techniques including environmental measures; site and soil investigations, designing and estimating from the contractors view; project costing and types of contracts, such as charter, unit rates, lump sum and risk-sharing agreements; the design and measurement of dredging and reclamation works; and early contractor involvement.

This years seminar included a group workshop to prepare a tender for a small dredging project. Groups selected the appropriate equipment and calculated the costs of the whole project, and one group was chosen as the winner.

Since 1993 IADC, often in co-operation with local technical universities, has hosted the weeklong seminar, especially developed for professionals in dredging-related industries. These intensive courses have been successfully presented in Delft, Singapore, Dubai, Buenos Aires, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Brazil.

The Seminars reflect IADCs commitment to education, to encouraging young people to enter the field of dredging, and to improving knowledge about dredging throughout the world.

In 2014, IADC will host a five-day course in The Netherlands, June 23 27, and the International Seminar on Dredging and Reclamation will be March 31 – April 4, for the first time in Australia.

In October, IADC also released Dredging in Figures, an annual statistical review of the global dredging market, as a service to all parties interested in the financial development of the dredging industry. Through data and charts collected from high-level international sources, as well as from its own member companies, the IADC tries to answer questions about and give insight into the major contribution of the industry to the world economy.

This newest document, issued in October 2013, focuses on 2012. The data provides information about the “drivers of dredging” waterborne trade, urbanization and demography, energy, tourism, climate change and coastal defense, and the environment. It includes the turnover of the open and closed global dredging markets and the types of projects where dredg- ing plays a significant role.
