Van Oord Awarded Palm Deira Project in Dubai
The project will involve placing one billion cubic meters of sand and 40 million tons of rock to create a 4000-hectare palm-shaped island. Van Oord will use 10 trailing suction hopper dredges and three specially-equipped rock dumping vessels in the project, which is expected to take eight years.
The Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the Dutch Prime Minister J.P. Balkenende were present at the contract signing on November 14.
Van Oord recently completed the archipelago Palm Jumeirah, and is in the midst of a project to build The World, an island group off the coast of Dubai.
The new Palm Deira will accommodate a community of 500,000 people.
