Boskalis, Van Oord Win Bahrain Island Contract

Royal Boskalis Westminster nv announced on December 21 that, in a 50/50 joint venture with Van Oord, it has won a major contract in Bahrain for the creation of ten islands (total area 690 hectares), including slope protection, beaches and navigation channels. The contract wil be executed over 24 months. The total contract value is approximately € 150 million.

The project called “North Bahrain New Town” is a large scale plan to reduce pressure on housing in the northern part of Bahrain. The reclamation of the islands and the dredging of the channels will require some 38 million cubic meters of sand, and the slope protection will require some 1.5 million tons of rock.

This project will be executed with medium-size hoppers and cutters.

This project in Bahrain is one of a series of large scale land reclamation projects on the global market for maritime infrastructure. This market is driven by long term factors, such as world population growth, growth of the world economy and the international trading volume as well as developments on the energy markets.
