Ellicott Receives Inaugural OPIC Impact Award

In a ceremony at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation’s (OPIC) president and chief executive officer Elizabeth L. Littlefield presented Ellicott Dredge Enterprises, LLC and its Ellicott Dredges, LLC entity with OPIC’s inaugural “Impact Award” for Ellicott’s work in Iraq. Ellicott was one of only eight organizations across the country receiving this award from OPIC, the U.S. government’s development finance institution. With the assistance of political risk insurance from OPIC, Ellicott was able to secure contracts in Iraq supplying dredges to de-silt hydroelectric dams as well as to improve flood control on the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and to improve irrigation canals.

In January, the PIANC MarCom Working Group 121 released Harbour Approach Channels – Design Guidelines to provide recommendations for the design of vertical and horizontal dimensions of harbor approach channels and the maneuvering and anchorage areas within harbors.

The Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) awarded Van Oord a EUR 500 million (about $680 million) contract for land reclamation work in Kuwait in a ‘sabkha area’ (a salt plain near the coast) for the construction of a new refinery.

Van Oord Returns to Surabaya, Indonesia Port Access Channel

Indonesian port company PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (Persero) has contracted Van Oord for dredging and maintenance work in the western access channel to the port of Surabaya in Indonesia. The contract is worth more EUR 50 million ($695 million). The project started in May and will last 10 months, followed by a twoyear maintenance period.

Cashman to Resume Hudson River Dredging on May 7

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that dredging on the Upper Hudson River in New York, will resume May 7. Cashman Dredging and Marine Contracting will continue work south of Schuylerville towards Troy, and also dredge in a two-mile section of river near Fort Miller that is not easily accessed by boat.

IHC Merwede Reports € 1.7 Billion Order Book

IHC Merwede increased its order book in 2013 across the main sectors of its business: offshore and dredging. The company received almost € 1.8 billion worth of new orders in the past year. At the end of 2013, the order book was valued at over € 1.7 billion, which is the equivalent of a backlog of approximately two years.

South Africa Port Orders IHC Dredge

The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) in South Africa awarded IHC Merwede a contract for the design, construction and delivery of a 5,500 cubic meter trailing suction hopper dredge. The new dredge will join TNPA’s existing fleet of IHC Merwede-built vessels, including the 4,200-cubic-meter (about 5,490-cubic-yard) trailing suction hopper dredge Isandlwana (ordered in 2008), and the grab hopper dredge Italeni (ordered in 2013).

GLDD CFO William Steckel Leaves the Company

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (NASDAQ:GLDD announced on April 10 that William Steckel, chief financial officer, is leaving the company to accept a senior management position with a privately held company. Concurrently, Vice President and Controller Katherine M. Hayes has been appointed interim CFO. The transition was effective April 24, 2014.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced that the third season of dredging and capping of contaminated sediments in Onondaga Lake in New York, resumed for the season in April. Preparation work began prior to that, with all the needed machinery and equipment, including continued reduction measures put in place.

Corps Awards Contract to Tetra Tech

Tetra Tech, Inc. announced that it has been awarded a $60 million U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract for architectural and engineering design throughout the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, in support of the Transatlantic Division. Under the contract, Tetra Tech will provide a full range of services for infrastructure and facilities from the initial stages of program development and planning, through all aspects of design.

IMCO Purchases NAUTIS ECDIS Classroom

The International Maritime College Oman (IMCO) purchased a classroom of NAUTIS Desktop Trainers and a NAUTIS Instructor Station. The simulators allow the IMCO to add the certified ECDIS Model course 1.27 training to its curriculum. The classroom was delivered and installed by VSTEP engineers in the IMCO premises in Sohar, Oman.

IMO Launches New Website

IMO Launches New Website IMO, headquartered in South Germany, launched a new website (www.imo-lifting.com), which focuses on lifting applications. It includes descriptions of each application and the ideal products for each, such as the IMO Slew Drive. The application is a ready-to-install lift upgrade, used in place of traditional slewing rings. Manufacturers of manlift or articulated platforms, truck-mounted, light and mobile cranes, telescopic lifts, crawler tracks or slewable mast can find the information in six languages: German, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Japanese.

Chris Ransome and Associates, Inc. (CRA) has added a new 26-foot survey boat to its fleet. The boat, built at Scully’s Metal Fabrication of Morgan City, Louisiana, is all-aluminum construction with a nine-foot cabin console and two 115-horsepower outboard engines. The boat will be equipped for hydrographic surveys, magnetometer surveys, sidescan, sub-bottom profiling and sediment sampling.

Our cover shows the final leg of dredging work for the Panama Canal expansion. Originally scheduled for completion in October 2014, the project is now on course for completion at the end of 2015. The massive project will be a paradigm shifter for cargo flow and trade patterns in the shipping industry. Discussions at the ports about the Panama Canal are rarely lamenting any delays in the project, but rather scrambling to meet the demands of the new post-Panamax ships.

Teledyne BlueView Releases 2D Sonar and Software

Teledyne BlueView released the M900-D, rated to 4,000 meters (about 13,000 feet) of depth. The M900-D system is housed in a thickwalled air-filled aluminum housing. The compact MSeries sonar line includes BlueView’s third generation electronics package, which is smaller, lower power and produces improved imagery over the previous models by applying techniques, such as automatic transmit power adjustment.

EIVA designed its new wide-sweep ROTV (remotely operated towed vehicle) ScanFish Katria, for detecting sub-bottom magnetic anomalies. The platform allows for time-efficient magnetometer surveys, as it covers larger survey areas in one sweep through a horizontal setup of four magnetometers.
