Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors B.V. (Van Oord) and Koninklijke Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) completed the first stage of Maasvlakte 2, an expansion of the Port of Rotterdam on April 17.  PUMA, the joint venture of the two contractors, started the project five years ago.

The contract also includes a 10-year maintenance period. Boskalis and Van Oord will keep the seawall at optimum strength until 2023. Much like the entire Dutch coastline, the maintenance includes adding sand to the soft seawall. Following any severe gale, the hard seawall will be inspected and if necessary, the cobble beach will have to be replenished.
