Shaw Gets Massive New Orleans Contract

The Shaw Group’s Environmental & Infrastructure Group has been awarded the largest design-build civil works project in the history of the Corps of Engineers.

The Corps of Engineers Hurricane Protection Office awarded Shaw the $700 million contract for the design and construction of the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal Hurricane Protection project at Lake Borgne Louisiana. The project is adjacent to the confluence of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.

The company made the award announcement on April 4 from its headquarters in Baton Rouge Louisiana. The project will be included in the company’s third quarter fiscal 2008 backlog.

J.M. Bernhard Jr. chairman president and chief executive officer of Shaw said “As a Louisiana-based company and key infrastructure services provider to the federal government we are proud to support our home state the citizens of the Greater New Orleans area and the Corps of Engineers in this historic project – the largest design-build civil works project ever undertaken by the Corps. Since the 2005 hurricane season we have been dedicated to supporting the federal government and the state of Louisiana in their mission to rebuild the Gulf Coast region and provide long-term solutions for the safety of local communities.”

Under the contract Shaw will provide project management design and construction for this critical segment of the New Orleans and southeastern Louisiana hurricane protection system to achieve the Corps of Engineers’ goals of interim protection by June 2009 and full 100-year level of protection by June 2011. The concept design for the project includes design and construction of operable flood gates across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and Bayou Bienvenue as well as a potential barrier wall that will connect the floodgate structures close the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet and transition into the existing levee system.

The final design concept will be determined when the Corps of Engineers completes its environmental compliance and public involvement process in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The NEPA process is expected to be completed within the next four months.

Shaw trades under the symbol SGR on the New York Stock Exchange.
