VPA Awards Craney Island Design Contract
Craney Island Dredged Material Management area (CIDMMA) is a 2500-acre confined dredged material disposal site in Portsmouth, Virginia that provides a long-term disposal area for material dredged from Hampton Roads Harbor.
Craney Island Design Partners is led by Moffatt & Nichol and includes architectural and engineering companies Fugro, VGS/S&ME, Malcolm Pirnie, Kimley-Horn, MMM Design Group, TBA, Alpha Corporation, American Consulting Engineers, and NXL.
The project will expand the existing CIDMMA by creating a new 580-acre cell on the east side of the existing facility that will be filled with dredged material from the harbor. When filled, the new cell will be capped and a marine terminal built. Craney Island Design Partners will be responsible for all facets of the planning, permitting, engineering and construction of the new facility.
“We are excited about continuing our work on this project, which began in 1998 under a contract to provide technical support to the VPA during this project’s feasibility study and environmental impact statement preparation,” said Mike Crist, a vice president with Moffatt & Nichol, and project manager for the Craney Island expansion. “Our long-term relationship with the VPA and our existing knowledge of the port’s needs on this project mean we are coming into it with a good amount of momentum,” he said.
