IHC Launches Dredge

IHC Holland launched a fully-automated cutterhead dredge “Al Mirfa” for National Marine Dredging Company of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on June 8. The 10,500 kW single pontoon dredge is being built at IHC’s Sliedrecht yard.

The vessel was named by Linda J. Ferguson, wife of NMDC Senior Superindendent Ron Ferguson.

The contract for design and construction of the dredge was signed at the end of 1998, and the dredge will be commissioned and added to the fleet in Abu Dhabi in early 2001.

The dredge is powered by a 1500 kW electric drive, and can dredge to a depth of 20 meters, using a ladder-mounted submersible dredge pump and a hull pump. The dredge swings by means of a stern spud and two forward anchors, and moves forward by a hydraulically powered spud carriage. A 25-ton travelling crane is installed on deck to access to all major equipment. The dredge is being built in accordance with Bureau Veritas rules and regulations.
