Van Oord to Deepen Norrköping Entrance
Van Oord received a contract to deepen the entrance channel to Norrköping Harbour, Sweden from an existing 12.5 meters to 15 meters. The work will be performed by Van Oord’s subsidiary Wicks.
Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands christened and launched Van Oord’s dredge Vox Máxima on April 24, 2009 at IHC Dredgers B.V. The dredge was delivered on January 21, 2010 and immediately deployed on the Maasvlakte 2 port expansion project in Rotterdam. The Vox Maxima is a 31,200-cubic-meter trailing suction hopper dredge.
On February 19, Van Oord laid the keel of a large, self-propelled cutter dredge Athena, to have an overall length of 129 meters, beam of 27.8 meters and total installed power of 24,000 kW. The Athena is expected to be operational in October 2011.
Van Oord also lengthened its trailing suction hopper dredge HAM 318, constructed two heavy-duty backhoes, two water-injection vessels, and a number of split hopper scows and sand carriers. A flexible fallpipe vessel, split hoppers and sand carriers are under construction.
On January 30, Jan de Nul launched the cutter dredge Zheng He at the Uljanik Brodogradiliste d.d. Shipyard in Pula, Croatia. The Zheng He is a sister vessel of the Ibn Battuta, launched in August, 2009
Queen Beatrix Launches Boskalis Centennial Dredge
Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands named and launched the new Boskalis trailing suction hopper dredge Willem Van Oranje on February 10. The ship is being built at the IHC Merwede shipyard in Kinderdijk, The Netherlands.
Boskalis is celebrating its centennial in 2010, and this was the main theme of the naming ceremony. To underline the historical significance of the year, the centennial vessel has been named after the founder of the House of Oranje Nassau, William of Orange (Willem van Oranje).
The dredge was designed and is being built by IHC Merwede, in close collaboration with Boskalis. A characteristic feature of the vessel’s design is the twin hopper concept. This concept makes it possible to optimize the load of the ship in relation to the draft, particularly in relatively shallow waters.
Sustainability is also a major focus of the design. The ballast water is cleaned before it is pumped overboard. In anticipation of increasingly stringent environmental standards, space has also been left in the funnel to install equipment for the additional cleaning of exhaust fumes.
