MAINTENANCE AND IMPROVEMENT DREDGING EIGHT AND SIX FOOT CHANNEL, SIX FOOT ANCHORAGE, EIGHT FOOT SETTLING BASIN AND 6 FOOT TOWN DREDGING AREA, WELLS HARBOR, WELLS. Maintenance and improvement dredging of the Wells Harbor Federal Project and municipal marina areas. Approximately 180,000 cubic yards of material will be dredged. The Federal Project work includes maintenance dredging of channels and an anchorage, and improvement dredging of a repositioned settling basin. The municipal project work consists of dredging berthing and access areas at the two Municipal landings on the east and west sides of the inner harbor. Dredging of the channel will be required to a depth of 16 feet plus one foot allowable overdepth with no side or end slopes, to the full project width of 150 feet. No bucket dredging will be permitted for this work. Killcohook disposal area number 2 will be used. Completion time for the project is 120 calendar days. Cost estimate $500,000 to $1 million. DACW51-00-B-0005. Bid opening CHANGED TO April 4, 2000, 10 a.m. CONEY ISLAND BEACH NOURISHMENT, SEA GATE, CONEY ISLAND. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers intends to procure beach replenishment at Coney Island, New York. The project consists of the construction of a stone revetment adjacent to the West 37th Street Groin in the Sea Gate community at Coney Island, New York. The revetment will be constructed of several sizes of stone and involve the possible placement of a geo-textile. The Corps of Engineers criteria for stone placement and geo-textile placement will be followed. The project also consists of dredging of sand immediately offshore of the Gravesend Bay side of the Sea Gate Community and the placement of the sand along the Atlantic shore of the Sea Gate Community adjacent to the west side of the West 37th Street groin. This dredging and placement of sand will occur concurrently. Debris on the Gravesend Bay side of the Sea Gate community will also be removed and disposal will be off site. DACW59-00-B-0016. Bid opening May 11, 2000. STILLING BASIN EXTENSION AND DOWNSTREAM SCOUR PROTECTION, CHARLEROI LOCKS AND DAM, MONONGAHELA RIVER. The work involves extending the existing stilling basin at Monongahela River Mile 41.5 and placing new scour protection downstream of the new extension and along the existing left abutment wall. Major features of the work include performing underwater excavation (dredging), furnishing and installing a steel sheet pile cut-off wall, furnishing and installing soil anchors in the existing left abutment wall, placement of tremie concrete to form the extended stilling basin slab, furnishing and placing granular backfill and filter materials, and furnishing and placing graded rip rap scour protection, and transport and disposal of excavated material in the Allegheny River, approximate river mile 25. Specialty services include diving and operations conducted from floating plant. The period of performance will be 540 calendar days. Cost estimate $5 million go $10 million. Unrestricted. Furnish rental equipment, operators, supplies, materials, labor, transportation and fuel to perform maintenance and rehabilitation of approximately 18 dredged material disposal sites, and levee maintenance along 14 miles of levee. The work for disposal area sites will consist of raising dikes, construction of new areas, grading material, installing weirs, and ditching. Levee maintenance work will include mowing, fertilizing, ditching, vegetation control, excavation, grading and filling to maintain levee crown. Dredging will include removing shoaled material and placement on adjacent beach. Maintenance dredging: removal of shoals to restore the authorized navigation channels width and depth on the Lower Tombigbee River from miles 45 to 213 at Demopolis Lock, or the Black Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway (BW& T) from Demopolis Lock to mile 338 at Oliver Lock and Dam, or on the Alabama River from miles 0.0 to 236.2 at Robert F. Removal of shoal material from Entrance Channel Cuts 1B, 1, and 2 (including wideners between Cut-1 and Cut-2) and from the Trident Channel and the Trident Turning Basin. The dredging work will consist of removal of approximately 159,000 cubic yards of shoal material from the outer portion of the project with disposal in Ocean Disposal Area-O as well as removal of approximately 102,000 cubic yards of shoal material from the inner portion of the project with disposal in the Nearshore Disposal Area or the Ocean Disposal Area-O. The determination of which disposal area to use will be based on a visual inspection of the dredged material. Work also includes turbidity monitoring. Removal of about 239,000 cubic yards of unclassified sediment from the navigational channel, transition area and impoundment basin. The material will be disposed in the near shore disposal area some eight miles south of the inlet. Material will be disposed landward of the -16-foot contour. Dredging is both landward and seaward of the COLREGS Demarcation Line. The nearshore disposal area is seaward of the COLREGS Demarcation Line. Remove approximately 150,000 cy from the Inner Channel and Turning Basin. The quantity of material represents dredging the channel and turning basin to the appropriate project depth for each area plus an allowable one foot overdepth. Material will be placed in either the nearshore disposal area or the Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (ODMDS) , depending on the quality of the material. Material identified with less than 20 percent fines will be placed into the ODMDS. The material is expected to contain both nearshore quality and non-beach quality. MARYLAND



The Swedish dredging company Skanska's US subsidiary Tidewater Skanska has been awarded a contract to restore a large bird sanctuary on Poplar Island outside Baltimore. Skanska was recently acquired by Royal Boskalis Westminster. The $37.6 million contract includes restoring the Island to its approximate size in 1847, creating an area of about 1100 acres, half of which will be wetlands. A 12-km dike will be built around the current island, which consists of a small group of eroded islands. Later the group’s upland and wetland habitats will be restored using dredged material from the Port of Baltimore. About 29 million cubic meters of dredged material will be used to reclaim land inside the dike. Smaller dams and channels will be created to create a complex of habitats for birds, including bald eagles, osprey, heron and egret.
