On July 12, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) of Kenya stopped the dredging of Likoni channel because of alleged breach of environmental constraints. Iddi Mambo, chairman of the Coast Development Transparency Initiative (Codeti) informed NEMA that waste that was to have been discharged 50 miles at sea by Contractor Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors, was seen floating near shore.

Economic recovery, coastal protection and environment restoration it all starts with dredging. That all-encompassing statement by Bill Hanson says it all. Hanson, who is vice president of business development at Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, was among several speakers emphasizing the importance of timely dredging of waterways, ports, harbors and coastal channels at the National Dredging Meeting May 24 and 25 in Washington, D.C.

Navy Channel Deepening Project Requires 50,000 Feet of Discharge Line

Norfolk Dredging Companys 10,000 horsepower dredge Charleston is deepening five miles of the Navy channel in the Elizabeth River from Lamberts Point to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia. The 24-inch discharge line, which began at 21,000 feet long, will eventually stretch for 50,000 feet from the dredge to the Norfolk Districts Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area in Portsmouth.

Angela Premo Receives 2011 Murden Award

Angela Y. Premo was honored by the Dredging Contractors of America on May 25 with the William R. Murden Lifetime Public Service award. She retired on March 2, 2011 from a 33-year career in the Corps of Engineers, devoted mainly to dredging and navigation projects and programs.
