Liberty Island Construction Begins

In mid-July, the engineering on the Liberty Island was nearly complete, and the first modules were under construction at Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock’s new trailing suction hopper dredge will have a 6540 cubic-yard hopper. Designed by Great Lakes Dredge & Dock engineers and LMG of Lübeck, Germany, the dredge is state of the art: fully automated and with features that allow versatility and economical dredging in a variety of conditions. Bay Shipbuilding is an integral member of the team, using intricate design techniques prior to building in order to reduce man hours and ensure an efficient build schedule.

The dredge is being built in modules, and construction on four of the modules had begun. In September, workers will begin assembling the modules in the graving dock. Dave Coombs of Great Lakes, is project coordinator, responsible for the hull shape and structure.

LMG performed the functional basic design of the dredge, and is supplying the dredging equipment.
