The Panama Canal pushboat Chame II sank at approximately 10:05 p.m. Friday, August 18, as she and the tug Gamboa transported the drill barge Thor--all three ACP property--toward a dredge site in Corozal West. The three had just exited the Miraflores Locks.

Bill Bauer Dies

W.H. Bauer Sr. died on Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at age 93, in a Galveston, Texas hospital. He is remembered in the dredging industry as founder and owner of Bauer Dredging Company, Inc., which operated in Port Lavaca, Texas from 1936 to 1965, and as a generous friend to and chairman of the nascent World Dredging Association in the late 1960s. He has been an emeritus board member of the Western Dredging Association since its reorganization in 1979.

Caterpillar Offers Global Service

Caterpillars Engine Products Division announces the availability of extended service coverage (ESC) for Caterpillar engines and generator sets in the industrial, electric power, petroleum and marine markets. ESC can be purchased from Caterpillar dealers worldwide as of August 1. For the first time, Cat engine owners are able to choose a standardized Caterpillar ESC package that ensures their equipment will be protected by the global network of Cat dealers and technicians.

Corps Seeks New Site for Barataria

The New Orleans District, Corps of Engineers has issued a proposal to designate an additional disposal area for the beneficial use placement of shoal material removed during routine maintenance of the federal navigation project, Barataria Bay Waterway, Louisiana. The proposal involves modification of the previously-approved disposal plan and the placement of dredged material into navigable waters, which requires issuance of a public notice.
