DCA Urges Senate Passage of Hurricane Funding Bill

On January 23, the Dredging Contractors of America (DCA) released a statement urging the U.S. Senate to approve legislation that provides financial aid to the hurricane-damaged East Coast.

The House of Representatives passed the bill on January 18. It provides $50.66 billion in emergency supplemental funding to help the East Coast rebuild in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy last October.

“The Hurricane Sandy Supplemental legislation provides much-needed assistance for North Atlantic communities devastated by the storm. We urge the U.S. Senate to act quickly to pass the Sandy Supplemental so that the communities that were devastated by this storm can be made whole again,” stated the DCA.

“The U.S. dredging industry stands ready, willing and able to respond to the restoration of navigation and recovery of storm-damaged communities, just as we did during the BP spill and other past crises,” the statement concluded.

Dredging will be necessary to restore beaches and build dunes to protect structures from future storms. Throughout the region, dune systems functioned as they were designed to do, and protected the buildings and communities they fronted.
