Anvil Attachments, in Slaughter, Louisiana was awarded a 2012 International Bulk Journal Award for Best Grab. The dredges removed 721,000 cubic yards of material in the final weeks of 2012 and beginning weeks of 2013, in response to shoaling that was restricting ship traffic starting in November.

On December 30, Jeff McKee began a 120-day assignment as temporary chief of the Navigation Branch at the Corps of Engineers Headquarters Operations Division. In announcing McKees assignment, Jim Hannon, chief of the Operations and Regulatory Community of Practice at Corps HQ, said, Jeff brings an extensive amount of experience and knowledge of the Corps Navigation Program. Jeffs strong technical, management and leadership skills will ensure our continued success in the multiple on-going strategic Navigation initiatives.

WEDA Gulf Meeting Focuses on Coastal Restoration, Funding and Hurricane Protection

Concerns about adequate federal government funding again were the focus of speakers at the WEDA Gulf Coast Regional Workshop held November 8 and 9 at the Westin Hotel in New Orleans. Beneficial use of dredged material was a repeated topic because it raises the cost of dredging. Not as much dredged material is being used as is available, several speakers noted.

Quarry Academy Provided Useful Productivity Knowledge

The 2012 Sandvik / Dyno Nobel Quarry Academy was held in San Antonio, Texas on November 13 through 15, and drew nearly 100 participants. The Quarry Academy was developed seven years ago to provide information concerning improving the total value chain in quarry operations. Sandvik / Dyno Nobel operations continues to focus on working with quarrying companies to provide knowledge, including knowing the right products and equipment for each application, and the features that provide the highest levels of productivity with the lowest operating cost.
