Dredeco, Boskalis Win Port Kembla Job

A joint venture of Dredeco (Australian arm of Dredging International) and Boskalis has won a $20 million contract for the dredging portion of a $140 million expansion of the Port Kembla, NSW, Australia inner harbor.

The contractors will use a cutterhad, backhoe and clamshell dredge on the project, which is expected to be complete in July or August. About 500,000 cubic meters of material will be dredged, including 200,000 cubic meters of contaminated sediment, to be placed in underwater containment areas in the Port Kembla outer harbor. The remainder of the material will be placed in an offshore placement area 10 kilometers off the coast, which has been pre-approved by the Australian Department of Environment and Heritage.
