Safety Equipment and Services

The Dredging Safety Management Program (DSMP) has focused attention on the safety aspect of dredging. There are many companies who provide goods and services that enhance safety in the dredging workplace, and which are needed for compliance with government safety regulations and the requirements of the DSMP. For the next few issues, this column will focus on providers of safety equipment and services.

Owner George Carlson provides first aid kits, medical equipment and emergency first aid training. He is a licensed trainer in CPR and automatic external defibrillation (AED), which means that he is authorized to train others in these techniques. Carlson ships first aid kits, containing band-aids, ointments, medications and trauma bandages, on short notice to locations all over the world. He also provides AED machines, practice mannequins for CPR training and other equipment for first aid training. He is in touch with dozens of suppliers of other safety equipment, such as fall protection harnesses, and will advise customers on sources of that equipment.

This company sells and recharges fixed CO2 systems in galleys, fire suppression systems and other protection equipment such as smoke detectors. The company was established by Gene Boatright in 1960, and the 20 employees service vessels in North Florida in Clay, Duvall and Nassau Counties.

Miller Fall Protection provides the complete line of Miller ® brand fall protection equipment, including full-body harnesses, shock-absorbing lanyards, self-retracting lifelines, retractable anchorage connectors, confined space and rescue equipment, professional training programs and engineered systems. The Bacou-Dalloz group was formed on September 6, 2001 with the combination of Christian Dalloz S.A., Bacou S.A. and Bacou USA, Inc. Five days later, the company was called to action by the events of September 11, and employees worked seven days a week to deliver 46,000 respirators, 5,500 hard hats, 50,000 pair of safety glasses and goggles, 14,000 pairs of cut-resistant gloves, and 3,600 first aid kits, all donated to charitable organizations, including the American Red Cross and Salvation Army in New York City and Washington, D.C.

Provides personal protection equipment (PPE) from two locations in Jacksonville. Emilie Ritz started Ritz Industrial Supply from her garage in April, 1983, soon outgrew the garage, moved to a warehouse and changed the name to Ritz Safety. Emilie’s son Pete joined the business in 1985, and in 1990 they opened a second branch. In 2000, Van Dyne Crotty, Inc. purchased the company and took the company from a reputable mom and pop corporation to a national entity with 35 employees. The company serves a variety of industries, including the dredging industry, with items such as safety glasses, hard hats, gloves, steel toe boots, respiratory equipment, first aid equipment, Coast Guard approved flotation vests and spill containment absorbents and booms.
