Saginaw River Deepening Study on Hold as Funding Unavailable

For several years, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has looked into deepening the Saginaw River near Saginaw Bay in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, but the federal government has not fully funded its share of a feasibility study, expected to cost $1.3 million in total.

Two Major USACE Maintenance Contracts Executed by Cottrell

Cottrell Contracting Corporation of Chesapeake, Virginia, reports that its dredge Lexington has been working on a contract known as Maintenance Dredging Wilmington Harbor Anchorage Basin and 42-Foot Project, Brunswick and New Hanover Counties, North Carolina Contract # W912PM-I6-C-0012 with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Lexington is an 18-inch cutter suction dredge with 4,250 installed horsepower and is 200 feet long and 38 feet wide. The contract was awarded in August 2016 and the project started at the end of September 2016. All work will be completed by the end of February.

Dutch Flood Protection Program to Begin Reinforcing Houtribdijk, Critical Dike Across the IJsselmeer

In December 2016, the Netherlands Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management, known in Dutch as Rijkswaterstaat, announced its intention to grant permits for the reinforcement of the Houtribdijk to two Dutch dredging companies, Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) and Van Oord. As of late January that project is set to proceed with a contract that carries a value of 90 million euros (about 96 million dollars) to be divided evenly between the two companies. The project is part of the Netherlands’ national Flood Protection Program (Hoogwaterbeschermingsprogramma).

Colombian River Authority to Terminate Dredging Contract with Navelena for Magdalena River

Colombia’s river management authority, Cormagdalena, said it will terminate a contract with Navelena, a consortium made up of Brazilian company Odebrecht and the Colombian government Valorcon, to dredge the country’s Magdalena River.
