Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor Purchases New Dredge for Winter Shoaling

After four years of drought, followed by an El Nin˜o season, Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor in Santa Cruz, California, had a federal entrance channel that had completely shoaled in through the winter. To compound the problem, the harbor’s dredge Seabright, which had been working to clear the harbor for 30 years, was nearing the end of its life. In June, DSC delivered a new dredge, Twin Lakes, to the harbor just in time.

In August 2015, Dr. Ali Maher and a team of engineers and soil scientists in the New York City area announced that their field test of the pneumatic flow tube mixing system (PFTM) for combining dredged material with a small amount of Portland cement had been a success.

USCG Shuts Down Nine Maritime DGPS Beacons

The U.S. Coast Guard has announced that because of the comments received from navigation, dredging and hydrographic survey sec-tors, that only nine maritime beacons will be shut down, or disestablished, leaving most of the coastal and inland river National Differential Global Positioning System (NDGPS) beacons in operation.

Johan Dolman’s Material Processing Equipment Has Been a Boon to Major Dredging Projects

On June 16, Johan Dolman and Ron Dielhof stood on the Miami Hyatt Regency patio near the location of the symbolic “last scoop” of the Miami River clean-up project, taken on October 15, 2008. Dolman’s company, Boskalis Dolman, part of the Boskalis group, was sub-contracted to process all 720,000 cubic yards of the material, mostly contaminated, removed from five miles of the river in that project. Ron Dielhof was a project engineer on that job, and today is Boskalis environmental process manager.

DSC DELIVERS DREDGE TO NCDOT

This spring the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) took delivery of a DSC cutter suction dredge, to work in the state-maintained intracoastal ferry channels, from Cape Fear River near Wilmington to Currituck Sound near the North Carolina-Virginia state line. It will also maintain an emergency route between Stumpy Point and Rodanthe, south of Nags Head – the route used when North Carolina Highway 12 is out of service due to a storm or other event.

Malaysian manufacturer EIK Engineering is marketing a new system for amphibious excavators that replaces a single chain drive with four direct-drive hydraulic motors mounted on the axles.
