Charles W. “Chuck” Hummer died on June 25 at the age of 78. He was battling ALS – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – and was admitted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center with pneumonia on June 21.

WEDA México Chapter Holds First Meeting

The newly-revived Western Dredging Association (WEDA) Mexico Chapter held its first meeting from September 1 to 2 at Centro Asturiano de Polanco in Mexico City. The chapter meeting—well attended by both members of the Mexican dredging community and vendors from across the world—featured presentations on the Panama Canal expansion, ongoing development projects at Mexico’s ports and along the country’s waterways, and the outlook for the dredging industry in the northernmost Latin American country.

GAO Denies GLDD Bid Protest

On June 8, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) denied a protest from Great Lakes Dredge and Dock over the cancellation of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract for beach renourishment in Cape May County, New Jersey, on which Great Lakes was low bidder.

WEDA Hosts Annual Safety Commission

At the WesternDredging Association (WEDA) Dredging Summit & Expo, the Safety Commission, led by Julie Hile of Hile Group, hosted its panel on Wednesday, June 24. Other panel members joining the group included Marc Sterns from Manson Construction Co., and a representative from the Corps of Engineers and Terra Contracting Services.

Brennan Honored by Wisconsin Engineers for Broadcast Capping System

Dredging and environmental contractor J.F. Brennan Co., Inc. was one of 12 companies who received Certificates of Merit from the Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers at its Wisconsin Governor’s New Products Awards (GNPA) ceremony on May 27. Brennan was honored for its Broadcast Capping System (BCS™), which places subaqueous caps and sand covers over contaminated bottom areas.
