Louisiana Mitigation Bank Approved to Supply Credits

Resource Environmental Solutions, LLC announced the approval by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District of a new 867.9- acre wetland and stream mitigation bank serving north and central Louisiana. The Little Eva Mitigation Bank, located in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, will establish and maintain 770.5 acres of bottomland hardwood wetlands, more than 13,590 linear feet of stream and nearly 60 acres of riparian buffer habitat. Mitigation credits resulting from restoration efforts within the project area will be used to compensate for unavoidable wetland and stream impacts from permitted project activity in the Red River Drainage Basin.

EPA Completes Fourth Season of Hudson River Dredging

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency completed dredging for this season on the Hudson River in November, with the project nearly three-quarters done. More than 612,000 cubic yards of river bottom sediment contaminated with PCBs were removed from the upper Hudson River during 2013, exceeding the annual goal of 350,000 cubic yards for project.

The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Germany began a coastal permafrost erosion research project (COPER), funded by the Helmholz Association and the institute, at Herschel Island in Canada. The research project looks to describe and quantify the erosion and related carbon release by using air- and space-born methods together with field research.

EPA Releases $243 Million Grasse River Cleanup Plan

After years of study, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a plan to clean up contaminated river sediment at the Grasse River Superfund site in Massena, New York, downstream of where Alcoa Inc. has operated an aluminum smelting and manufacturing plant since 1903. The Grasse River flows northeast and empties into the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Vogt Represents WODA at London Convention Event

Craig Vogt represented the World Organization of Dredging Associations (WODA) at a meeting of contracting parties to the 1972 London Convention and its 1996 Protocol (LC/LP), held October 29 through November 2. The meeting was held at the London headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and included a reception to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the LC, which was signed on Nov. 13, 1972.
