WEDA Hosts Large Crowd for WODCON XXI in Miami

More than 600 people attended the Western Dredging Association (WEDA) 21st World Dredging Congress and Exposition, WODCON XXI, at the Hyatt Regency Miami from June 13 to 17. WEDA members were joined by sister associations the Central Dredging Association (CEDA) and the Eastern Dredging Association (EADA), which together form the World Organization of Dredging Associations (WODA). WODCON is held once every three years.

Outstanding Dredging Professionals Honored at WODCON Gala Dinner; Venue for 2019 Conference Announced

Dr. Michael Palermo was named the 2016 Dredger of the Year by the Western Dredging Association (WEDA) board of directors, and Dr. Robert Randall received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The award presentations were made at the Gala Banquet on June 16, during the World Dredging Conference (WODCON) in Miami.

GERMAN DREDGING MARKET LEADER STRA-BAG WASSERBAU ACQUIRED BY BOSKALIS

In early January, Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) announced a ‘heads of agree-ment’ with STRABAG SE for the acquisition of the dredging activities and assets of STRABAG Wasserbau GmbH, formerly known as Möbius Wasserbau. STRABAG Wasserbau, based in Hamburg, Germany is the market leader in the German dredging sector. The company has an annual turnover of approximately €£50 million ($55 million) with a broad array of equipment. By April 4, the Boskalis’ acquisition of the dredging activities and assets of STRABAG Wasserbau GmbH was concluded for the agreed transaction price of €£70 million ($78 million). This does not include any goodwill and has been financed entirely from Boskalis’s own cash flow.

The 53rd Chief of Engineers and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick, retired from military service at an Armed Forces Full Honors Change of Command and Retirement Ceremony on May 19 at on Summerall Field, Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Virginia.

Dredging Presence Grows at IMX

The Inland Marine Expo (IMX), held from May 10 to May 12 at the America’s Center Convention Complex in St. Louis, drew many attendees and exhibitors, its largest show to date. As the conference grows, so has the presence from dredging industry companies focused on the inland waterways. The 2017 IMX will be held at the Dome in the America’s Center from May 22 to 24.

The Portland Engineer District’s two-day Industry Days in April drew more than 200 attendees. The program on April 26 focused on small business contracting, and April 27 was devoted to the Mouth of the Columbia River (MCR) Jetty Major Rehabilitation Project.

IADC’s Dredging Seminar held in Panama in April for the First Time

The International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC), with the support of the Organization of American States-Inter-American Committee on Ports (OAS-CIP) and other interested parties, held its Seminar on Dredging and Land Reclamation at the Hotel Riu Plaza in Panama City, Panama from April 11 to 15. This was the first time the seminar was held in Panama, and the demand was clear. The seminar drew a full house of 33 participants from a variety of countries and organizations.

Rutgers Engineering Building to be Named for Richard N. Weeks

The new flagship building of the School of Engineering at Rutgers University’s Busch, New Jersey campus will be named after Richard N. Weeks, chairman of Weeks Marine Inc. and a 1950 alumnus of the Rutgers School of Engineering.
