Port of Los Angeles Ends Strike, Streamlines Permitting Process

Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa released a statement December 4 that an agreement was reached between labor and management, bringing an end to the eight-day strike.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Removes Shoaling from C&D Canal

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. has completed emergency dredging on the C&D Canal, using the clamshell dredges 51 and 52, and transporting the shoal material to Poplar Island in Chesapeake Bay. The dredges removed 721,000 cubic yards of material in the final weeks of 2012 and beginning weeks of 2013, in response to shoaling that was restricting ship traffic starting in November.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (NASDAQ:GLDD) has acquired the assets of Terra Contracting, LLC, for approximately $20 million. Terra is an environmental services provider operating within the United States. One area of particular expertise is in sediment removal and remediation on major river projects.

WEDA Gulf Meeting Focuses on Coastal Restoration, Funding and Hurricane Protection

Concerns about adequate federal government funding again were the focus of speakers at the WEDA Gulf Coast Regional Workshop held November 8 and 9 at the Westin Hotel in New Orleans. Beneficial use of dredged material was a repeated topic because it raises the cost of dredging. Not as much dredged material is being used as is available, several speakers noted.

Quarry Academy Provided Useful Productivity Knowledge

The 2012 Sandvik / Dyno Nobel Quarry Academy was held in San Antonio, Texas on November 13 through 15, and drew nearly 100 participants. The Quarry Academy was developed seven years ago to provide information concerning improving the total value chain in quarry operations. Sandvik / Dyno Nobel operations continues to focus on working with quarrying companies to provide knowledge, including knowing the right products and equipment for each application, and the features that provide the highest levels of productivity with the lowest operating cost.

NRC Says Corps of Engineers Infrastructure on an Unsustainable Path

The National Research Council (NRC) committee on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Water Resources Science, Engineering and Planning has released a report entitled Corps of Engineers Water Resources Structure: Deterioration, Investment or Divestment? It reports that the Corps has been unable to maintain its navigation channels, locks, dams, and levees in recent years because of constantly declining budgets.
