In November 2013, Royal Boskalis Westminter N.V. acquired a contract from the Associated British Ports to deepen the Southampton approach channel. The contract is worth approximately EUR 35 million (about $48 million).

In December 2013, Holland’s Noordekwartier Regional Water Board and the Department of Public Works and Water Management awarded a Van Oord and Boskalis joint venture a contract to reinforce and maintain the Hondsboossche and Pettemer Sea Defense from Petten to Camperdium, the northern stretch of the Dutch coastline.

Charleston Harbor Deepening Project is On Track

Proponents of deepening Charleston Harbor to beyond the existing 45-foot authorized depth have dubbed the project the “Charleston Harbor Post-45 Project.” The deepening will allow the port to better serve the post-Panamax ships that will begin plying the seas in greater numbers when the Panama Canal expansion is complete next year.

The Russian branch of Jan De Nul N.V. sent 18 vessels to dredge 10 million cubic meters (14 million cubic yards) for the future liquefied natural gas (LNG) Port of Sabetta, located on the Yamal Peninsula in Northern Russia.

Vortex performs maintenance in Sacramento and Stockton Ship Channels

At the end of August, Vortex Marine Construction, Inc. of Oakland, California, began maintenance dredging in the Sacramento and Stockton deepwater ship channels. The Corps of Engineers Sacramento District will likely ask for an extension, past the dredge window, to finish in December.

Dawson Making Frac Sand from Tailings

Since 2008, Ricky Dawson, of Bluff Creek WAM, has been using the Pump Vacuum Systems (PVS) JetPump to mine and separate aggregates from sand in two locations in Louisiana. (See IDR, January/February 2008, Jet Pump Drives Portable Unit that Re-Mines Tailings.) Because the sand did not meet the size requirements for concrete or hydraulic fracturing (frac) sand, it was stockpiled.
