Galveston District to Update Navigation Channel Data Online

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District has finished uploading deep-draft navigation channel data on its hydrographic surveys webpage. This year, the district will begin posting the same data for shallow-draft channels its maintains along the Texas coast. The data can be found at http://www.swg.usace.army.mil/Missions/Navigation.aspx.

PIANC will host Dredging 2015 in Savannah, Georgia, from October 19 to 22. The tour will take place Thursday, Oct. 22 to Savannah Harbor, including the Corps of Engineers disposal area “12A” improvement project.

CRA and Orion Held ‘Dredging Your Docks’ in November

KEEPING THE DOCKS WORKING Chris Ransome & Associates (CRA, Inc.) and Orion Marine Group sponsored their Dredging Your Docks seminar on November 5, 2014. The purpose of the annual seminar is to raise awareness for maintenance dredging in ports, harbors and waterways such as the Houston Ship Channel. With more marine construction underway and new docks coming online in Texas, there are many challenges that the private industry of the region is now facing, such as the availability of upland placement and the economic disposal of dredged material. On November 5th, around 180 marine terminal operators, civil engineers, shipping agents, port authorities and federal officials gathered at Brady’s Landing Restaurant to learn more about these obstacles as well as other popular dredging topics such as permitting, hazardous waste management, vessel groundings, dredging costs, beneficial use and sediment testing.

Sen. Paul Sarbanes Led the Poplar Island Authorization in 1996

Poplar Island, a dredged material placement site and ecosystem restoration in Chesapeake Bay, was renamed The Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island in the 2006 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill, honoring the individual who led the effort to get the project authorized in the Water Resources Development Act of 1996.

The Western Dredging Association (WEDA) Gulf Coast Chapter meeting, held on November 19 and 20, featured talks on the restoration of the Louisiana coastline, which gave the attendees a good idea of some of the individual projects and initiatives being used in that gargantuan effort.
