PORT NOLA NAMES NEW CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Brandy D. Christian has been named the new chief operating officer of the Port of New Orleans by president and CEO Gary LaGrange, succeeding Patrick J. Gallwey, who will retire March 1 after 34 years with the Port. Christian comes to the Port after 14 years with the Port of San Diego, serving for the past five years as vice president, strategy and business development.

PORTS OF SEATTLE AND TACOMA SIGN ALLIANCE AGREEMENT

An interlocal agreement (ILA) submitted by the ports of Seattle and Tacoma in October to form a Seaport Alliance took effect in December 2014.

Dredging of the federal portion of the Barbours Cut Channel is almost complete, and dredging in Bayport Channel began in November.

COLLEGE REPORTS ECONOMIC IMPACT FOR PORT OF VIRGINIA

The College of William & Mary performed an economic study to measure the economic impact the Port of Virginia had on the state in fiscal year 2013. The college’s Raymond A. Mason School of Business released the study on December 29.

PANAMA CANAL AUTHORITY AND LOUISIANA PORT SIGN COOPERATION AGREEMENT

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) signed a cooperation agreement with the Port of Lake Charles in Louisiana in early January. The agreement aims to attract new customers from the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry. Due to their beam dimensions, LNG vessels cannot transit through the waterway, which will be remedied with the expanded Panama Canal.

FUNDING AGREEMENT SIGNED FOR LAKE WORTH INLET DREDGING

On December 31 the port and the Florida Department of Transportation joined the Corps of Engineers to deal with shoaling in the Lake Worth Inlet in Palm Beach County, Florida, with an emergency dredging project. The Port of Palm Beach had been under draft restrictions since September 2014.

MAYOR APPOINTS NEW LEADERSHIP AT THE PORT OF LOS ANGELES

In January, the Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti announced that his Deputy Mayor for City Services, Doane Liu, will become Deputy Executive Director and Chief of Staff at the Port of Los Angeles.
